Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) Element 1 Practice Exam

The essential idea being tested is what information makes up a standard radiotelephone distress call. In an emergency, the priority is to alert rescuers quickly with enough to locate the vessel and understand the immediate danger. The call begins with MAYDAY spoken three times to signal distress, then identifies the vessel with its name and call sign so responders know exactly who is calling. Next comes the position so rescuers can pinpoint the location, followed by a concise description of the distress and the type of assistance required. Information about the number of people on board and any immediate hazards or needs is also included to help coordinate rescue.

Weather information, while important in many maritime contexts, is not a required part of the standard distress call itself. It can be provided later through weather broadcasts or separate communications, but it is not one of the core elements that define a radiotelephone distress call.
